Friday Flickr Fix – 06.15.07 – Censorship

FlickrcensrFlickr has an international incident on its hands. The photo sharing site is now available in eight languages, and is being accused of censorship in some of the countries it now serves.

More than 5,000 images tagged censorship help tell the story.

If your Yahoo! ID is based in Singapore, Germany, Hong Kong or Korea you will only be able to view safe content based on your local Terms of Service so you won’t be able to turn SafeSearch off. In other words that means, that German users can not access photos on Flickr that are not flagged "safe." Only flowers and landscapes for the Germans. We will not let this happen! Copy and upload this picture to your account - show Flickr who we are!

Thomas Hawk, arguably the most popular/talented/prolific photographer on Flickr is also detailing the issue and pulling Yahoo! into the debate.

The Flickr community is quickly uniting and using the site to express themselves.

The only obvious response from Flickr thus far has been the addition of “Loves You” to its logo. As this clearly does not address the issue, I’m hopeful it’s their way of letting everyone know they’re working on the situation.
