Comment Spam Returns, Typepad Captcha STILL Useless
“Third verse same as the first…”
The comment spam I'm receiving is ridiculous.
To my readers that are also bloggers and have switched platforms, we need to talk.
My site could use a new interface, so why not suck it up and move the whole thing to a dedicated URL on a new platform?
I’ve got a dotcom-era, vanity URL burning a hole in my pocket. Maybe I should launch kevindugan.com/prblog?
Any feedback from fellow nerds folks familiar with the ups and downs that come with a switch from Typepad to Wordpress would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. We now return you to our regularly scheduled program.

Me personally never used typepad - I'm with wordpress from the very beginning.
Wordpress is a great platform - I use a SpamKarma 2 plugin that solves almost all the problems with the spam.
Here is the instruction of moving to wordpress from typepad - http://codex.wordpress.org/Importing_from_Movable_Type_to_WordPress
Good luck, and feel free to connect me if you need help.
Dmitry.

I switched from Typepad to Wordpress a few months ago. I actually prefer the Wordpress interface and flexibility more, and because it's open source there are all kinds of great plugins, including very effective spam filters.
I was also able to import all of my Typepad posts into Wordpress very easily. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions about the switch.

I switched from Blogger to Wordpress, and Wordpress kicks ass up and down and all over the place. For my personal blog, I use the free wordpress.com hosted deal, but at work we used the host-your-own, full-on Wordpress deal - both are awesome.
Wordpress' built-in Askimet spam blocker is nearly flawless, as far as I can tell. Mikey Arrington over at TechCrunch is always posting about how many spam comments its caught on his site - upward of 2 million now.
Wordpress rules. The migration (from Blogger) was effortless -- comments were even imported along with posts. I'm sure Typepad is supported, too.
As far as the URL is concerned, you could set up your domain much like Neville from FIR - at www.nevillehobson.com. His "main page" at that URL is his blog (Wordpress, too), but he has other static pages linked to from there. Seems to work well.

I've switched from Blogger to Wordpress and never regretted it. Blogger has gone completely Ajax a few days ago, but that seemed to only have affected the backend.
The great thing about WP is that they are constantly reworking and improving it, so there are always some smart things to discover that make you go "Whooo, this is awesome."
I also don't think I have ever seen a better variety of ready to use skins - they have users create some as well, which does probably half the magic. WP rules!

I know this post is a little outdated now, but I wanted to chime in about how awesome WordPress is. I've been running it for about a year now, and have been very happy. However, WP alone won't stop the spammers from filling up your comment queue. Last week, I installed WP's native Akismet plugin and have had only 1 spam comment make it through the filter -- and 729 have been caught as of this posting. You'll be really happy with WordPress + Akismet when it comes to a solid blog software package and great spam filtering. Hope that helps!

Thanks Daryl. The input helps. I just need more hours in the day so I can make the switch!
